Toledo Tech Talk

Presented by:

Hello Friday. This past weekend we threw my mother a SURPRISE birthday party! Happy birthday, Mom. HUGE shoutout to Metroparks Toledo… The venue was gorgeous (Lamb Center at Sidecut Metropark) and the rental process was incredibly easy 🎯

Holding a party, business meeting, company outing, or switching up the location for a family dinner night... book here. Seriously, 5 minutes total. I found the perfect venue, put in my credit card information ($200 bucks) and boom 🧨 I secured a beautiful venue. There are plenty of locations throughout the region to choose from, including the Crown Jewels the Glass City Riverwalk venues.

This week we have 2️⃣ articles that were written based on direct conversations with local business owners (did someone say podcast 🎙️)…

and, of course, the Money Confessional. For those of y’all that are new… the Money Confessional is an anonymous spotlight showcasing how local Toledoans approach money and finance. Want to be spotlighted?! submit your confessional here.

Let’s get into it!

Unprecedented Growth | CEO Talk

Vital Health, Maumee, OH

Vital Health in Maumee, OH, is on a serious growth streak—without the growing pains. Under CEO Jacob Spellis, the team has expanded to 50 strong, overall billing is up ~200%, and patient volume has skyrocketed by 124% 📈 in 2024 alone. They are certainly in a hyper-growth stage.

Their secret? Real impact. With programs for both youth and adults, Vital Health is making waves through strategic school partnerships and good old-fashioned word of mouth 👄. When care is this effective, people talk—and business booms.

Spellis, emphasized the need to remain vigilant despite the growth. Whether it be disciplining staff on timeliness ⏰ , negotiating the cost of rubber gloves 🧤, or ensuring insurance companies are paying for service 💵 - no job is too small for the CEO.

Founded in 2022 by local entrepreneurs Jacob & Nicole Spellis this is a local business we can all get behind!

The Silicon Heartland | Ohio Tech

OhioX CEO retreat 2024

Ohio is on its way to a new nickname… the Silicon Heartland (forget the valley). Within the past five years, the state has seen billions in new tech investments. Google’s pouring in $2.3B to it’s already $4.4B to enhance cloud and AI infrastructure, Anduril’s building a $900M defense tech hub in Columbus, and Akron 🦆 just snagged $31M for an innovation district.

Not to mention the $28B investment made by Intel to build factors for semi-conductors. Over 10,000 jobs are expected to be created in New Albany, Ohio (70% of which are construction gigs) 👷.

But… it gets even closer to home! The City of Oregon is expecting a new tenant in town, a datacenter! The city approved a sale of land for ~$17M. Many local leaders are seeing the economic opportunity… Not too far away in Middleton Township there is a $750M project to build a new datacenter and create jobs!

The data is coming to Northwest Ohio and so are more jobs. 💾

The average salary for a data center employee is expected to be ~$80,000 annually.

The End of an Era

Jo-Ann Fabrics on S. Reynolds

Your grandma’s go-to craft haven is unraveling. Joann Fabrics is shutting down all 880 stores across 49 states, with closures starting in Q2 2025. After filing for bankruptcy twice in the past year, the Ohio-based retailer couldn’t patch up its finances against shifting shopping trends and mounting debt.

The silver lining? Massive closeout sales are here. If you need fabric, yarn, or crafting supplies, now’s the time to stock up—before Joann is stitched into history. 🫡

FYI local entrepreneurs looking for an expanded store front, you can bid for leasing rights to the two Toledo locations through Joann’s real estate brokers.

Money Confessional | DINK Couple from the East Coast Settles in Ottawa Hills

Age: Mid-to-late 40s. We’ve built solid careers and are now reaping the benefits of strategic financial moves.

Children: No kids, and that’s by design. Our financial stressors revolve around maximizing investments, not daycare costs.

Living Situation: We own a home in Ottawa Hills. Coming from the East Coast, the cost of housing here is a steal, and we prioritized a neighborhood with strong property value retention.

Job: One of us is in finance (investment banking/private equity), the other in healthcare administration.

Salary: $300K combined—one of us earns $170K with an annual bonus, the other $130K with performance incentives.

Salary Journey: Started in the six-figure range on the East Coast, but real income power increased with the move to Toledo. Cost of living savings have effectively boosted our net worth faster than if we had stayed in a high-cost metro.

Best/Worst Recurring Expense:

  • Best: Gym and sauna membership—$120/month for mental and physical well-being.

  • Worst: HOA fees—$400/month for things we don’t really use.

Splurge: Travel. First-class flights and high-end hotels for international trips. We believe in living well now while still securing the future.

Toledo Restaurant: Mancy’s Steakhouse—get the bone-in ribeye and a great bottle of wine.

Total Net Worth: ~$2M, mostly from disciplined investing, salary savings, and real estate appreciation. Key lesson: control lifestyle inflation and invest early.

Personal Financial Freedom: $5M would make us feel 100% financially independent—enough to cover expenses indefinitely while continuing to invest.

Retirement: Goal is early retirement in our 50s, with $7-10M in assets. We’d still work on passion projects but without financial pressure.

Toledo Wealthy: Around $1.5M-$2M in liquid assets or $300K+ annual income. At that level, you’re living comfortably with financial security, frequent travel, and the ability to invest in passion projects or philanthropic efforts.

Philanthropy: We’re focused on giving back to Toledo through initiatives that align with our interests in real estate, economic development, and healthcare access. We actively support:

  • Downtown Revitalization Efforts – Donating to and investing in programs aimed at restoring historic buildings and expanding affordable housing.

  • Local Entrepreneurship – Providing seed funding and mentorship through Toledo’s startup and small business incubators.

  • Healthcare Accessibility – Supporting ProMedica’s initiatives for underserved communities and donating to local clinics.

  • Arts & Culture – Sponsoring Toledo Museum of Art events and funding community programs that promote creativity in underprivileged schools.

  • Education - Supporting athletic expansion and liberal arts through Lourdes University. The campus is gorgeous and so are the folks running the place.

Knowledge: Learned from trial and error, plus books like The Millionaire Next Door, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and real estate networking groups. Also, having mentors in private equity and real estate investment circles has been invaluable.

Money Snacks

3 financial headlines we are snacking on

  • Alexa Play: Frank Sinatra “Fly Me To The Moon.” Did you know Toledo Express Airport offers private aviation services? Checkout Grande Aire for the best travel experience. Yes, this may be on the heavier side for a “Money Snack” but nonetheless should be mentioned! Get a quote today for your next luxurious trip!

  • Spring has sprung! Which if you are like me, that means you are getting the sticks out and ready to chase a little white ball around a field. Make sure to site aside some extra money in the budget the next few months to enjoy the great courses we have here in Toledo! From the meticulously manicured greens of White Pines GC to the challenging fairways of Stone Ridge Golf Club, golfers can swing their way through northwest Ohio's hidden links paradise faster than you can say "mulligan."

  • What’s in the water in Waterville? Homes are being built rain or shine, recession or no recession in Waterville, OH. One neighborhood seems to be a hot spot as of late with homes going for up for sale north of $500,000 on the regular. Here in Coventry Glen four homes are on the market as we read this. in the last ~5 years home prices have seen an estimated 44% increase in the area. Next time you are dining at Farnsworth Cocktail Bar maybe take the scenic route home and check out the great real estate available!
