Allow Us to Reintroduce Ourself

Presented by:

Hello Friday. March madness kicks off this week. Well, it bounced off yesterday to be exact. šŸ€ My buddies and I took to town looking for the best place to enjoy basketball, eat a few appetizers, and enjoy an adult beverage or six.

Our journey had us visiting the new(ish) French Quarter Square in Perrysburg. Where there is a modern and clean Buffalo Wild Wings with plenty of TVs (40+) to watch just about every game at once.

We then found ourselves headed over to the ESPN Bet sports book at the Hollywood Casino. Turns out there is a couch to be rented, and frankly, it was a great experience. Not a huge gambler here, but the experience was fantastic. $25 per person gets you the best seat in the house. šŸŽ°

There is so much to enjoy in the Toledo region, check out the stories below and the money confessional this week is a must read! šŸ¤‘

Welcome to town, Big Cat!

Big Cat takes the helm at BGSU

Eddie George is, officially, in town and I don’t believe he’ll be leaving any time soon! šŸˆ

Bowling Green just made a $3 million bet on a Heisman winner. Eddie George, the Ohio State legend and former NFL workhorse, is now the Falcons’ head coach, earning $600K+ per year over five seasons. With the opportunity for additional income for any ā€˜side hustles’ (endorsements) he chooses to participate in. I only hope for the region’s benefit that Thayer Chevrolet šŸš— steps up to get Eddie on a commercial or two šŸ˜†

Beyond the Xs and Os, George’s arrival is a financial touchdown for the region. Expect packed stadiums, boosted merch sales, and a hospitality boom as fans flock to see if he can turn BGSU into the next Cinderella story. If nothing else, the local economy just got a five-year stiff-arm of cash.

Last but not least… you can still get an Eddie George jersey today.

Big Tech in Toledo?!

Inside the Jefferson Center

The historic Jefferson Center in Toledo, Ohio is being revitalized as a tech hub, marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly named "Innovation Post." Four tech companies—Segula Technologies USA, Junior Achievement, WorkSpring, and Vortec—are moving into the building, occupying 60% of the space and creating what city officials describe as Toledo's largest job creation effort this year with 170 high-tech positions.

This development replaces a failed plan from 2021 when California-based Bitwise was supposed to occupy the building before its founders were sentenced to prison for fraud. The project is supported by a $20 million federal grant, with ProMedica owning the property and collecting rent from the new tenants. City officials see this as the anchor for a larger social innovation district, with plans to revitalize 38 city blocks in the surrounding neighborhoods with infrastructure improvements. Shout out to the Director of Economic Development for the City of Toledo, Brandon Sehlhorst.

Did someone say ā€œSkinny?ā€

Freeeeeee* Walleye

Walleye Run - Maumee, OH (1999)

Shoot, heard walleye and immediately thought of chili. Not bad marketing Wendy’s…

However, this time we are talking real walleye and we are talking about the 8,000 - 10,000 fishermen (and women) šŸŸļø that visit the region for the infamous Walleye run. Believe it or not, the muddy Maumee river is a premier fishing destination.

In 2019, it was estimated the economic benefit to the region from hotels, camping, gas stations, local pubs, and restaurants contributed to $7mm - $9mm in economic uplift. I have to assume >20% of that was spent on pizza and burgers at the Village Idiot šŸ• and Dale’s šŸ”šŸŗ

Embracing the walleye run, the fishermen (and women), and the economic benefit is certainly in the region’s best interest. Now if only we had a local festival or kick off party to celebrate the annual traditions.

Money Confessional | Late 30s Single Mother Spreading $80k Salary and Giving Back

Living Situation: ā€œOwns a home in Old Orchard. She put down 20% to avoid PMI and elected to take care of the note in 15 years to expedite equity growth. Luckily, her interest rate is a 3.2%. She recommends buying within your means and reviewing the cost of property taxes!ā€

Children: ā€œTwo kids. The most stressful thing about money and kids is balancing childcare costs with saving for their future.ā€

Salary Journey: I started as an administrative assistant making $40K. After getting my master’s degree (paid for with tuition reimbursement from work), I moved into management and got a jump to $65K. Promotions and experience got me to $80K. Biggest tip: Take advantage of employer-paid education and negotiate every raise!

Credit cards: ā€œI use the Chase Sapphire Preferred card—great for cashback and travel rewards. Paying my cards in full each month.ā€

Best expense: ā€œGym membership ($40 / moth) - it is my stress reliefā€

Net worth: ā€œRoughly $250K—mostly from home equity, savings, and retirement investments. My advice: Live below your means, invest early, and automate savings.ā€

Toledo Money Hack: ā€œJoin local Buy Nothing groups on Facebook—great for getting kids' clothes, toys, and household items for free. Also, use the Toledo Library ā€”it’s amazing for free activities, audiobooks, and even career workshops.ā€

Financial Knowledge: ā€œLearned from my parents (who were frugal), books like The Simple Path to Wealth, and trial and error. Also, following personal finance experts on YouTube.ā€

Rich in Toledo: ā€œVery hard to gauge… I say if you are mentally happy you are rich!! But… financially, $250K+ per year or $3M+ in net worth. That’s enough to live comfortably and give back.ā€

Giving back: ā€œWith my financial resources allocated elsewhere I give back to the community by volunteering my time with Lucas County Canine Care & Control (LC4). I think I benefit more (mentally), in taking care of spending time with the pups.

Money Snacks

3 financial headlines we are snacking on

  • The Mez, a new event venue in downtown, launched this month. If you have not already, RUN don’t walk to check out pictures of the space… we needed this.

  • Coffee Quest 419 has officially commenced. Shout out to @missluvleelocs for the FYI. Find your caffeine buzz at a local coffee shop and take a few weeks of from the local Starbucks…

  • Population growth (mostly decline) is a hot topic of conversation for the region’s political leaders. However, Perrysburg continues to grow at a rate of ~20% in the last ~15 years… Next time you are grabbing a beer at Inside the Five just know you are contributing to one of the region’s larger municipal budgets (~$34mm).
